Boy Meets Girl (and a bun)

Do you know what happens when it rains for 2 days and then the sun comes up? A humidity so intense that any rational person with troubled hair must simply give up and go for a bun. I didn't expect this situation to happen the day I go for a boyish look but I am thinking the heels serve as a friendly reminder that I am a girl wearing a men-inspired look? 

 In any case, here's some food for thought... When you try to pull of a boyish look, it is extremely necessary to use as many girly things as possible. In my case, I think the only girly thing in my outfit is the pink and the rhinestones (because I was expecting wavy hair in my shoulders) but next time, I will be sure to measure the humidity level before stepping out of the apartment. I have to admit, I am having a serious trouble getting over my lack of hair, cleavage and leg show-off, is that terrible? What do you think? How do you best pull off this look?

Summer Mojo

 I’ve always been a bit of a conservative when it comes to my look. Some of my close friends wouldn't necesarily agree but I always remind them, it could be way worse! Now, when I mean conservative I don’t mean trousers and a button-up cotton blouse, I simply mean, I never take my fashion sense to extremes… I keep it as normal as I can with a splash of edgy. This is why color blocking might become my summer mojo. It's a simple way of dressing that simply requires an eye for the perfect color combinations to create a successful ensemble. It's complexity can be untangled by a fifth grader if you asked me...

When I pair one of these outfits I always go back to my kindergarten years when my mom used to talk to me about the rule of three's: wear three and only three colors in one entire outfit, more would be committing a fashion crime. I adore my mom and she's someone who can put an outfit correctly but I have never been a huge fan of her style, however I gotta hand it to her, she got something right. When it comes to this trend, I suggest to follow the rule of three’s and put together 3 pieces that are basic but different colors. Be bold! Create combinations you had never thought of, think outside the box. The main point is that when somebody looks at you they see a variety of colors in a uniform way that simply work, and don’t worry if people keep staring… you are supposed to stand out, not go unnoticed. Leave the latter to the boring people!

Spring-ing!

Gotta love a beautiful Spring afternoon that entails  good company, good food and wine all the way till 9 pm. A glass of wine can make my day just as much as a new pair of shoes. Only difference is the durability of each, I guess.

 When it comes to spring wardrobe, it's safe to say that a shearling vest might not be the answer but since the weather has been kinda tricky lately, I've had to improvise on ways to keep myself warm. After a few weather surprises on my way to work, I had to unpack my winter coats again just until things get settled. I guess so much for being too positive! In any case, I am obsessing over pastels this season and you will soon discover what I have been accumulating for you all these past months. As I've said so many times before, when I like something... I reaaaalllyyyy like it, so its safe to say that my closet has definitely transitioned into a different group of shades. Give me a pink pastel blouse and I'll throw you a party... figuratively and maybe even literally. What are you obsessing over?

There's different ways to pull of a comfortable look without looking like you just got out of bed. In my world, it has to be the perfect combination of lose-fitting clothes, soft textures and neutral colors with the perfect amount of jewelry to get it just right. Wear the wrong shoes, and you will look like you are trying to hard, wear something too big and you might just look like you're partaking in the dreadful 'walk-of-shame' act. Flip-flops are out of the question and pants resembling sweatpants are not even worth considering. Maxi skirts the ideal bottom and with a sexy slit, what can get better than that? During these last cold days, I am taking advantage of the comfortable look as much as I can. In a few weeks the days of dresses, colors, short skirts and tight tops will begin and as happy as the warm weather makes me, I will miss wearing all black and feeling like I'm still looking fresh. But in retrospective, I guess that's one thing I can live without for a few months!

Weeklong Interim

People, people, people... I know! I've been a bad blogger. Unfortunately, what was scheduled for a weekend trip turned into a week+ stay which left little time for me to stop what I was doing, get into my Rosie Huntington mode and snap some pics. This, combined with the fact that I left my camera home, and my wardrobe, definitely put me in a bit of  a pickle. However, having lunch with one of my favorite fans, I mean friend, yesterday, I was convinced loosen up and pose. Can you guess where I am at?

Enlightenment

Every once in a while, I get a desperate urge to take apart my closet in search of items I have not used in a while. I am sure everyone of you have found that one vest, dress, or skirt that you bought on a whim yet never found the right time to wear it. If you are like me, you could have also hung several things on top of it, due to the lack of space/hangers, and let it endure a slow and miserable death. Or, went on an even better shopping spree that put that one item on the back burner. I tell you this because this is exactly the case with the maxi skirt I am sporting up top. When I bought it, I mightily convinced my mother it was the perfect purchase. I had ten different ways to wear it in my mind already so it would be money well spent. Little did I know that 2 years would go by before I would find the right time to wear it. I am not proud of it, I am aware what $25 to spend means to others but I guess it is one of those things you need an enlighting moment to wake you up.
As I move to the next step in my  life, I have made it a priority, no, better yet, a rule, to make sure this never happens again. I will theorize on ways to do so, considering my continued lack of space, this will be a a bit more complicated than exprected. But as Tony Robbins once said so insightfully, "if you do what you've always done, you'll get what you've always gotten," and that is a pile of unused clothes out of season.  So... challenged accepted!

A tricky thing

I must confess...although global warming is a threatening situation to the survival of this planet, I can't say that I am terribly disappointed with the bizarre weather. I do seem to be concerned with next years winter, but I got plenty of months to dread it. Now, back to the topic of this blog, I must confess another thing, I bought these jeans months ago but barely ever wear them. Flares like these are a tricky thing. When I stare down at them I feel like I am extremely underdressed or on my way to a Texas hoedown. The latter one would be fun if I was indeed in Texas, on my way to hoedown, but unfortunately this is not the case. I am actually in DC.. on my way to work. In any case, as I've spent considerable amount of time dressing these suckers up,  I'll share a few things I learned on the way:

#1 NEVER wear them with flats. Unless you'd like to look like your on your way to a college class in 2003
#2 Work a slim combination up top. Either a loose yet fitted top or a fitted top with some sort of vest. Although bell bottoms look great with a fitted top, pants that are more palazzo-like work best with some looseness in the top too. It's a symmetry thing....
#3 Do not wear long top without tucking it in. You will risk looking severely underdressed or from the scene of Janis Joplin video... but then again... to each its own!

And like always, if you are not like me style-wise.... just ignore rules 1 to 3. Anyone care to share their thoughts on flares like these?

Do not alert the authorities... I am back! I apologize for my extended hiatus but my trip to Panama required my complete attention and left little time for me to delight you with my presence. However, I come to you with good news... First and foremost, I want to thank Ellie from Fashion with Ellie and Damycool from De Todo y de Nada for awarding me with the Kreativ and the Stylish Blogger Award respectively. Monochromatic look: Check!

There's something so special of a monochromatic look. Maybe it's the posibility of turning a simple color scheme into something outré by mixing it just the right way, or the complexity of said word... but ever since we've been seeing the trend around, I have been fascinated... and still working hard on pronouncing the word correctly. Of course, adding a pop of bright colors and neons is also a sight worth seeing, but I believe that the ability to make something simple into something fashionable is what every style aficionado should aim for. The trick with a monochromatic outfit is in the details. Whether you decide to mix the textures, add an outstanding print, wear an eye-catching piece of jewelry... always have in mind that somehow something needs to be 'different.' If not, people will always find some sort of fruit, vegetable or cartoon to compare you to. You don't want to look like one of the smurfs so aim to find something in the outfit selection that removes the image from people's minds. And hey, if you do end up looking like a smurf, or a carrot, or even a tree log, embrace it, at least all eyes are on you!

Work Wear

Every once in a while, I wake up feeling like I actually work at an office that requires a business-like attire. This especially occurs after I realize  that pairing my Indian bib necklace with a collared blouse can lead to amazing results. Let's just say, I made my boss pretty happy that day.
